Farmers Market at Summit Lake

We had the pleasure of being a part of the 2022 Summit Lake Farmers Market. Sponsored and managed by Lets Grow Akron . Members of our Yard Corps & Black Beanz groups both participated in this weekly event! The crew took time on Tuesday to bake at traditional African bread (kind of like American doughnuts..but a little less sweet), vegetables grown by Shanti Farms, & Black Beanz Merchandise.

We help the kids to understand that the skills they are learning and using for the Farmers Marketing (creating product, inventory lists, setting up their table) are all skills they can use througout life to be successful and maybe even create & run their own businesses.

The doughnuts were a HIT at the farmers market and we sold out each week!!

We look forward to being a part of this weekly event again next year!

Bringing the heat

Hot Pepper Festival

Over the past 2 years in the month of August more than 150 guests have joined us at the Exchange House (located in Akron’s North Hill Neighborhood) for our Hot Pepper Festival.  At the same time we also gather to celebrate the International Harvest Festival for new immigrants in the great city of Akron, OH.

Over the last 2 years we’ve been blessed with various talent from around Akron. Our good friend and internationally-renowned award winning Nepali film director Binud Paudel, graced us with us EM-C talents as well as a local martial artis instructor putting on a memorable performance

Along with interesting talent and guests we also enjoy: Rotten tomato stomp, carnival games, dancing, a farmers market, international foods/picnic and of course our Hot Pepper Eating Contest! Each year we keep growing and we hope that in 2021 we can continue this great festival tradition! We thank everyone who has been involved the past two years! Namaste!

Food and Community

A Golden Time Picnic

Our NEWEST program is our Golden Time Picnic. This combines a few of our programs in one. Our students serve and prepare a collection of delicious snacks–hot and cold. Our Nepali and African dance crews provide the entertainment. Picnickers go home with a bag of produce provided from the gardens around Akron that we tend to all summer and sample craft items, including jewelry, created by our talented crew of young artists.  All proceeds go directly back into our program to help fund events like our Golden Time Picnic.

Looking towards the future
